Gordon Edgar is a San Francisco resident and has been the cheese buyer at Rainbow Grocery Cooperative since 1994. His cheese memoir, “Cheesemonger: A Life on the Wedge,” was published in early 2010.

What do you like best about working during the holidays? People are indulging and buying their favorite foods, discussing their menus with other shoppers and putting aside their food issues for a couple of weeks. It’s refreshing.

What question would you like to never hear again?
“Are you the head of the cheese department?” We’re a decentralized worker cooperative. I’m the buyer, but I’m not a boss!

Do city residents overwhelmingly prefer one type of cheese for their holiday parties? This year the triple-cream Cowgirl Mt. Tam had our biggest increase in holiday sales.

What is the oddest reaction to your cheese book?
Well, I never wanted my picture on the cover — even though it’s a great one — and that was really brought home by a few people who made miffed comments about how much better I look on the cover than in person. Hey, people, it’s not a personal ad!
