A quick reminder of a not-to-be-missed show this weekend: New Wave legend and “Celebrity Apprentice” star Cyndi Lauper in an intimate nightclub setting, at San Francisco’s Independent.
She’ll be backing her new down ’n’ dirty R&B collection, “Memphis Blues,” which she tracked in Memphis with such stellar guest stars as Ann “I Can’t Stand The Rain” Peebles.
The blues, Lauper insists, “is the basis for everything, so I wanted to do an authentic CD. It’s an important thing to do as an artist, to go back to step one again. And I’ll never forget playing with Allen Toussaint or singing on the same mic as Ann Peebles — that was just extraordinary.”
It being that festive season, it must be noted that Lauper — with her Swedish pals The Hives — also recorded one of the most-wicked holiday songs ever, “A Christmas Duel.”
How did that strange collaboration occur?
“I was in Sweden, had a day off, went to their studio, and they said ‘Listen — this song will be really funny’” she recalls. “And I said ‘Oh, my God! That’s nasty!’ But then they started playing me these really old Swedish traditional songs with some really nasty stuff, so I figured ‘OK! I could try this!’ Plus, I like them — I’m a big fan of The Hives.”
