Celebrating Special Events at the Historic Cliff House

The world-famous Cliff House has been a San Francisco icon since 1863 and is the crown jewel of San Francisco’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). Known for its history, location, and ambiance, the Cliff House is perched on spectacular cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

In 2003 in a joint undertaking of the National Park Service and restaurant owners Dan and Mary Hountalas, the 1909 building was extensively renovated to restore the original neo-classical architecture. An amazing two-story wing inspired by the architecture of the Sutro Baths was added to house the elegant Sutro’s at the Cliff House restaurant.

For well over 100 years San Franciscans have been celebrating their events at the Cliff House and that tradition continues today with the beautifully renovated Terrace Room and its private terrace. There are very few wedding and special event venues that can offer historic charm and ambiance dating back to the turn of the century.

On October 15, 1911, President William Howard Taft was honored at the Cliff House with a luncheon in the now famous Terrace Room. President Taft was the fifth U.S. president to visit the Cliff House during its long and colorful history. The Terrace Room is one of the most beautiful venues in Northern California. And in San Francisco it offers the only outdoor terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This amazing setting offers views of the famous Seal Rocks, the Marin coastline, the Pacific Ocean, and Ocean Beach. Sightings of flocks of pelicans and seagulls as well as the occasional glimpse of seals, dolphins, or whales offer up one of nature’s best shows.

Their private events team has over 36 years of combined experience and it shows in their glowing reviews online and on many social media websites. Consistently voted Best Wedding Venue and Best Party Venue by San Francisco readers, guests are in very good hands when they choose the Terrace Room for their special event. The Terrace Room can accommodate up to 120 guests for a seated event and up to 150 guests for a standing cocktail reception. Included is a private bar, a Banquet Manager to oversee the event, and a private outdoor terrace for guests to enjoy.

Monday through Saturday the Cliff House offers two dining options – the Bistro Restaurant for a casual dining experience featuring classic San Francisco fare and the stylish Sutro’s at the Cliff House. This two-story restaurant offers stunning panoramic ocean views and a seasonal menu that focuses on local ingredients and top fresh seafood. Additionally, on Sundays and holidays there is a champagne brunch buffet in the Terrace Room that is a long-standing San Francisco tradition.
