After a long time away, director Cameron Crowe is back in fighting-form force, with the new Pearl Jam documentary “PJ 20,” now available on video, and the upcoming “We Bought A Zoo,” about a widower (Matt Damon) who buys a run-down zoo and decides to get it up and running again, in theaters Dec. 23.
And naturally, the diehard music fan came up with something special for the soundtrack, which arrives ahead of the picture on Dec. 13 — he invited one of his heroes, Jon Thor Birgisson — AKA Jonsi, of Sigur Ros renown — to compose it all. And it was written and recorded over four meticulous months last summer at LA’s Village Studios, and at Jonsi’s secluded home studio in Iceland,
The soundtrack also boasts “Gathering Storms,” a songwriting collaboration between Crowe and Jonsi. And they even developed a secret code name for the hush-hush project — “Helma,” after Sigur Ros’s 2007 tour film.
rowe believed the score was so intrinsic to certain “Zoo” scenes, he played it on set for Damon and co-star Scarlett Johansson to hear during shoots.
“Jonsi arrived from Iceland with a toy sampler keyboard and a heedful of ideas,” Crowe recalls. “Within a week, [he] had composed a series of themes that would reflect everything we’d hoped for. In his music were all the highs and lows and passionate in-betweens of the film itself.”
