Caltrain plans to hold a community meeting this week to discuss upcoming construction activities in Burlingame and Millbrae related to the electrification of its rail system.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Burlingame Recreation Center, located at 850 Burlingame Ave.

Construction work on the horizon includes utility relocation and the inspection of signal and communication equipment, as well as the installation of foundations for the overhead contact system poles. Such work is slated to begin in the next three months.

The project will electrify the Caltrain corridor from San Francisco’s Fourth and King Station to the Tamien Station in San Jose, and involves converting diesel-hauled trains to Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains.

Caltrain’s system performance, including the frequency of trains and faster train service, is anticipated to improve with the electrification of the rail system. The electrified trains will also reduce noise, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, agency officials said.

The electrification project is slated to be operational by 2021.
