A day after CJ Beathard’s best performance as a pro, head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn’t prepared to commit to either of the quarterbacks on his roster as the starter after the bye.
“We’ll see how practice goes next week,” he said.
Basically, 49ers fans will have to wait till next Monday to see if Shanahan is leaning one way or the other.
“We’ll see how Jimmy [Garoppolo] responds this week,” Shanahan said. “We’ll get to work more one-on-one with him, get a little extra practice … and see how it goes.”
Beathard banged his thumb during his touchdown run on Sunday. He didn’t break it, so he’ll be available to start if the 49ers decide to go with him again.
Meanwhile, Garoppolo will spend the bye week getting more familiar with the playbook. While most of the team will take some time off, Garoppolo will work with Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello in Santa Clara.
Shanahan said it’s a good problem to have two serviceable quarterbacks.
