A’s bring Stephen Piscotty home

Rumors that had been floating around the MLB Winter Meetings in the Orlando suburb of Lake Buena Vista, Florida proved to be true on Wednesday night as the Oakland Athletics completed a trade to acquire outfielder Stephen Piscotty from the St. Louis Cardinals, as reported by Jon Heyman.

Piscotty, a Pleasanton native who played his college ball at Stanford, was moved down the Cardinals’ outfield depth chart and expected to be traded after they acquired Marcell Ozuna from the Miami Marlins.

Piscotty wanted to return home to the Bay Area after his mother was diagnosed with ALS during the 2017 season, and the Cardinals were able to both grant his wishes and give him a chance at more playing time by completing the deal.

The move means the Athletics can play Piscotty as an everyday corner outfielder and let Khris Davis, whose arm has been an area of concern the past two years, move to the DH spot.

Earlier in the day, Susan Slusser reported that a deal was expected to be completed by the conclusion of the Winter Meetings.

To complete the trade, Oakland sent infielders Yairo Munoz and Max Schrock. Munoz, a shortstop by trade who can also play second and third base and even added outfield skills to his arsenal in 2017, batted .300 between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Nashville and stole 22 bases over the past season. Schrock, who was acquired from the Washington Nationals in August 2016 for reliever Marc Rzepczynski, batted .321 for Midland.
