A woman’s body was discovered Wednesday in a stairway at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, according to hospital officials.

A hospital engineering staff member discovered the body in the stairwell of the power plant building of the hospital at around 1 p.m., Department of Public Health spokesperson Rachael Kagan said in a statement.

Hospital officials do not yet know if the woman was a patient. The power plant building is used only by maintenance and engineering staff and is kept locked and inaccessible to the public, Kagan said.

“We’re very concerned that this happened,” Kagan said. “We don’t know how this woman gained access to the area where she was found and we are absolutely looking into that.”

This is the second time that a woman’s body has been discovered in a stairway at the hospital. In late 2013, 58-year-old Lynne Spalding, a patient at SFGH, was found dead in a stairwell weeks after she was reported missing.

San Francisco settled a lawsuit over her death for $2.94 million in early 2015.

Kagan said the hospital has made “many changes since that time and we have no reason to believe that this case and that case are connected, but we don’t know much about this situation yet.”

The latest death is currently under investigation by health officials, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco Fire Department.
