Body found at Westfield Centre, death ruled a homicide

The body of a white man was found at the Westfield San Francisco Centre mall Wednesday morning and the death is being investigated as a homicide, a San Francisco Police Department spokesperson said.

Police received a call at 10:15 a.m. reporting a body found inside the mall at 865 Market St., Officer Grace Gatpandan said, though she declined to say where exactly the body was found.

Medical Examiner’s officials, who said the victim has yet to be identified, responded to the scene but have yet to declare the manner of death. More details about the person who died and their possible cause of death were not immediately available.

Gatpandan did say the victim is believed to be in his 30s.

While the police have not said were the body was found, an employee of Cole Hardware on Jessie Street East said he saw the Medical Examiner’s van in the alley and police tape blocking off much of the area.

Meanwhile, a representative of the mall said the shopping center remains open.

“San Francisco police are conducting an investigation proximate to the Jessie Street East entrance. The Centre is open and operating normally, and we are cooperating fully with the investigation. Since this is an active investigation, SFPD has requested that any inquires are directed to the SFPD media relations office,” reads the statement from the mall.

Wednesday’s incident marks the 31st homicide in San Francisco in 2016.
