School officials join in celebration of volunteers

San Francisco public school officials will be on hand Wednesday as a local education nonprofit celebrates the achievements of school volunteers.

Among those recognized will be George Kelley, who has given his time volunteering by reading to first-graders at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy for the past 10 years, according to the school district.

Superintendent Carlos Garcia and school board President Kim Shree-Maufas, as well as Lisa Spinali, executive director of the San Francisco Educatioh Fund, will be at a "back to school" lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at 600 Stockton St.

The community-based nonprofit after recently merged with San Francisco School Volunteers. The organization's goals include supporting teachers via training and resources and to help students get engaged in fostering positive changes at their local institutions.

Students from Fairmont Elementary School, School of the Arts and the Arts & Sciences Academy will perform at Wednesday's event.
