Park officials have made a counteroffer to North Beach Festival organizers since they recoiled from paying $89,000 for a permit to use the Washington Square Park grass.
Now they’re charging $20,198, which includes a $13,173 tab they also paid in 2009 for turf regeneration. However, last year there was an $18,000 cap on sod replacement fees and this time there’s none.
Park officials also want to amend the permit with these provisions:
- The permittee, the Department, and interested community members will participate in Washington Square site visits immediately before the event, within 48 hours after the event, and 2 weeks following the event to assess the event’s impact on the park and determine any sod replacement that might be required.
- A report detailing the final outcome including site plan improvements to further reduce event impact on the park will be provided to the Commission no later than September 1, 2010.
The 56th annual festival is on June 19 and 20, and Rec and Park commissioners will decide to make the amendments on Thursday at their regular meeting.
