Officer killed on duty to be remembered

A memorial service is slated for today to mark the third anniversary of police Officer Bryan Tuvera's death while on duty.

Friends and colleagues will gather tonight at 8 at the Taraval Station, 2345 24th Ave.

According to a police account, Tuvera was shot Dec. 22, 2006, by a suspect wanted on a felony warrant. When the suspect attempted to flee, officers began foot pursuit. The suspect broke into a resident and went into a garage. When officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, the suspect opened fire, striking Tuvera. A second officer returned fire and hit the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tuvera was pronounced dead early the next morning. He was 28.

He entered the Police Department on July 1, 2002.
