Mayor Gavin Newsom wasn’t ready to jump on the boycott bandwagon even though it’s tempting.

The Mayor reiterated Monday his disdain for Arizona’s new state law to outlaw illegal immigrants, calling it “un-American.”

Having said that, he was less decisive about whether San Francisco should move ahead and boycott the state, which would include terminating city contracts with Arizona-based businesses.

The City Attorney on Monday called on city policymakers to boycott Arizona and Arizona-based businesses in the wake of a “draconian” new anti-immigration measure signed into law by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday that criminalizes illegal immigration.

“I appreciate the desire to condemn the act and the positioning to say we are vehemently opposed,” Newsom said. “But I also think we have a lot to work to do to have a sober dialogue about is this something possible? Is this something that’s achievable and doable?”
