Mayor blasts opponent for being chummy with energy, oil companies

Mayor Gavin Newsom has unveiled his second television ad in the race for lieutenant governor, attacking Republican opponent Abel Maldonado on his environmental record.

All along, Newsom has blasted the moderate Maldonado for his “no” vote on the landmark climate bill AB 32.

In the 30-second ad, Newsom calls out Maldonado, saying he not only took thousands of dollars from energy companies, but has consistently sided with Texas oil companies in their efforts to roll back California’s laws to hold polluters accountable.

“I’ve got news for you, Texas — don’t mess with California,” Newsom says in the video riffing off the Lone Star state’s beloved slogan “Don’t Mess With Texas.”

The ad was released the day after Maldonado descended on the steps of City Hall with Bay Area Democrats and Independents to show he has support in Newsom’s hometown.

Maldonado has consistently defended his record on the environment, but on Wednesday, he made his priorities clear: “I’ll tell you what’s more important right now — safe streets,” Maldonado said. “If you can’t walk safe within a community, nothing else matters.”
