Library chief says Chinatown branch weathers sprinkler storm

City Librarian Luis Herrera reports that the water sprinkler valve that burst Sunday morning in Chinatown’s Public Library soaked about 1,400 books, but “most of which are going to be salvaged.”

“Approximately 1,400 books [were affected], but the majority of those are going to be dried and processed. They were in the Asian interest both English and Chinese,” Herrera said.

The valve burst prompted the closure of the library until Tuesday morning. Thousands more DVDs and CDs were drenched as well but most of these are “simply going to be dried and put back on the shelves,” Herrera said. “Staff did a great job of drying and repairing the electrical systems and computers and so everything was back on board on Tuesday morning.”
