Excelsior meeting set for Wednesday

A proposal to transform an abandoned train depot into a community arts center in the Excelsior District will be discussed before community members on Wednesday night.

The Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse, once part of San Francisco’s first railroad line, has been in disrepair since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The vacant center, located on San Jose and Geneva avenues, has now been eyed as an integral part of The City-backed proposal to remake the Balboa Park transit station and its surrounding area.

City planners and local community leaders think the former depot would be an ideal place to house a community arts center, with a focus on engaging the Excelsior’s extensive youth population.

Officials behind the project will meet with the community members on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Ingleside Presbyterian church on 1345 Ocean Avenue.
