In discussing Mayor Gavin Newsom’s recent nomination to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, supervisors used the conversation as a chance to express reservations about Muni accountability.

At the Rules Committee hearing Thursday, Supervisor David Campos said he would support appointing Cheryl Brinkman to the board, but noted that it doesn’t do anything to resolve lingering issues with the way the transit board and agency is run.

“The current structure does not provide for the level of accountability and independence that is needed and until that structure changes we will continue to have the same problems: a lack of representation of certain communities and a lack of transparency,” Campos said.

That’s partly why city supervisors were pushing a Muni reform charter amendment, which would have stripped the mayor of sole power to appoint to the SFMTA board.

That measure was tabled last week after Supervisor David Chiu and Mayor Gavin Newsom agreed to form a Muni reform task force. In exchange supervisors dropped the charter amendment measure.

Chiu’s office said the task force will begin its work after the August recess.
