Alioto-Pier wants more public comment

Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier introduced legislation Tuesday that would amend the Board of Supervisors rules that restrict general public comment at supervisors' committee meetings.

Currently general public comment -- the period in meetings when people can come and speak to the supervisors on any topic they want other than what’s on the committee agenda -- is only available during full board meetings.

Alioto-Pier’s legislation stems from a sunshine complaint filed with the Sunshine Task Force. The task force found the complaint had merit. The complaint said Supervisor Chris Daly wrongly pulled a taxi charter amendment proposal from a board committee agenda during a July 2 meeting without allowing for public comment.

Sunshine Task Force President Richard Knee sent a Sept. 2 memo to the Board of Supervisors recommending “that the board and its committees demonstrate a commitment to both the letter and the spirit of sunshine by revising their policies in a way that will maximize allowance for public comment during their meetings."

Daly’s behavior has prompted Alioto-Pier to submit legislation in the past.
