Electric vehicle charging stations will be installed across the Bay Area with the help of millions of dollars in grants from air regulators.
A lack of charging stations is seen as a barrier to the adoption of electric cars, with would-be owners fearful of being stranded without access to a charger.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced it will provide $5 million grants to support the following installations:
- 3,000 home chargers at single family and multifamily dwellings
- 2,000 public chargers at employer and high-density parking areas
- 50 fast chargers within close proximity to highways
Vehicles create more than half of the region’s air pollution.
The use of electric vehicles can reduce air pollution because fossil fuels are burned more efficiently in power plants than in engines.
Additionally, renewable energy could be used to recharge electric vehicles.
“The past several years have seen exciting progress in the development of electric vehicle technology,” BAAQMD Executive Officer Jack P. Broadbent said in a statement. “Creating a useful charging network will make it easier for Bay Area residents to spare the air every day by going electric.”
