Anyone trying to catch a cab on a Friday night or during morning commute hours can tell you San Francisco’s taxi industry has its shortcomings – the waits are seemingly endless.
And if you want to see a cab driver get angry, just bring up the idea of adding more cabs to improve service.
Supervisor Scott Wiener has made it no secret that one of his top priorities in office is to improve the taxi industry. On Tuesday, he requested the first of what will be quarterly hearings in which the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which oversees Muni and taxis, will come before a board committee to discuss how it is improving taxi service.
“If we really want to get people out of their cars, we need a reliable Muni, an effective car-sharing program and world-class taxi service,” Wiener said. “Our taxi system falls short. We need more cabs on the road, better dispatch and better coordination among cab companies.”
