A domestic violence consortium and women leaders are calling on Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi to resign from office amid an expected decision on changes of domestic violence.

They held a rally outside of City Hall today at 2 p.m.

“In the wake of allegations of spousal abuse and Mirkarimi’s ridiculous assertion that spousal abuse is ‘a private family matter,’ we are calling on him to step aside,” said Beverly Upton of the Domestic Violence Consortium in statement. “Domestic violence by anyone—including elected officials—cannot and will not be tolerated by San Franciscans.”

The public call for his resignation comes as District Attorney George Gascón has signaled a decision about charging Mirkarimi will be this week.

A Panasonic video camera and a black iPhone were seized by police last week from the home of Mirkarimi’s neighbor for a photo of a bruise his wife allegedly sustained during a domestic violence incident and text messages about the injury, according to a police affidavit.

Mirkarimi’s attorney Robert Waggener has called the evidence “flimsy,” but allowed for the possibility of misdemeanor charges being filed.
