Cindy Wu picked for Planning Commission position

Board of Supervisors President David Chiu has picked Cindy Wu, a community planning manager for the nonprofit Chinatown Community Development Center, to serve on the Planning Commission.

The commission seat opened up when Mayor Ed Lee appointed chair of the Planning Commission Christina Olague Jan. 9 to the Board of Supervisors’ District 5 seat, which represents the Fillmore, Western Addition and Haight neighborhoods. Olague was appointed to the board seat vacated by Ross Mirkarimi who was elected and officially became sheriff on Jan. 8.

Wu is a graduate of Berkeley with a degree in architecture and receives her master's in city planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  As a project manager for the Chinatown Community Development Center she helped with outreach on the Central Subway project.

Chiu’s selection of Wu requires approval by the Board of Supervisors. The board’s Rules Committee will vote Thursday on the appointment to the seven member Planning Commission. The full board is expected to vote on the appointment the following week.

In other appointment news, Chiu has picked Arcelia Hurtado to serve on the Board of Appeals.  She is the executive director of the Equal Rights Advocates, a national nonprofit women’s right’s organization. She has worked as a deputy state pubic defender and taught Constitutional Law at San Francisco Law School.
