In keeping with traditional sends offs of their colleagues, 10 supervisors have submitted a resolution up for a vote Tuesday commending Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, who on Jan. 8 steps down early from his District 5 post to become the sheriff.

According to the members, Mirkarmi was hard at work since being elected in 2004. “Supervisor Mirkarimi was an effective and prolific legislator, he was primary sponsor of and passed more than 125 ordinances while successfully co-sponsoring almost 150 more, passing over 300 resolutions and sponsoring 15 charter amendments,” the resolution says.

The resolution also cements Mirkarimi’s legacy, noting landmark accomplishments including the “first-in-the-nation ban of the use of plastic bags” and how he “constantly pushed for police accountability and foot-beat patrols” and “supported neighborhood livability by promoting local farmers’ markets, leading the re-vitalization of the Divisadero Corridor.”

Mirkarimi is also given credit from the other supervisors for implementing crime reduction strategies and reducing the homicide rate in District 5. “Mirkarimi was never afraid to challenge the status quo to improve the lives of every day people,” the resolution says.

The District 5 supervisor began his political career as a Green Party member and recently became a registered democrat. His overall political efforts, the resolution says, has strengthened the progressive movement in San Francisco.
