A segment of Haight Street could be changed from one-way traffic to two-way traffic as part of a move to speed up transit service on the congested artery.

By introducing two-way traffic on Haight Street between Laguna and Market streets, Muni service will improve by one to three minutes a trip, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

The change will benefit riders on the three Muni lines that travel on that stretch of Haight Street: the 6-Parnassus, the 71-Haight-Noriega, and the 71-Haight-Noriega Limited. The decision to transition Haight Street to two-way traffic was part of the agency’s Transit Effectiveness Project study of Muni’s operations in 30 years.

The SFMTA’s board of directors is expected to approve the changes to Haight Street at its meeting today.
