Campaign spot spoofs 'Moneyball'; David Chiu plays Brad Pitt role

David Chiu’s carefully hoarded mayoral campaign cash is finally being splurged on ads, one of which casts the Board of Supervisors president in the role of Billy Beane, the Oakland A’s general manager played by Brad Pitt in “Moneyball.”

Scroll down to see a video of Chiu's campaign ad and see how he compares to Pitt in the 'Moneyball' trailer.

In the youtube video titled “Cityball,” Chiu sits at a boardroom table -- presumably talking about San Francisco’s finances -- and insists, “We’ve got to think differently.” Beane became known as a game-changer after the 2003 book that revealed Oakland’s method of putting together a competitive team without nearly the budget of other clubs.

According to the campaign, Chiu saw the movie and read the book and liked the themes. Plus, the ad combines San Francisco’s election season, a critically acclaimed movie and the World Series.

As for Chiu’s acting skills, campaign spokesman Addisu Demissie didn’t brag.

“Okay, so maybe David is no Brad Pitt, but the film that we parody has a message that couldn't be more appropriate for our city,” he said in an email.
