San Francisco’s live music scene could get a whole lot richer. The Board of Supervisors -- in a second and final vote Tuesday -- unanimously approved a new kind of permit that will make it more inviting for restaurants and cafes to offer live music.

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi introduced the legislation. San Francisco will now offer “limited live performance” permits for cafes and restaurants to have live music. The new permit for these businesses costs $385, while nightclubs and other large scale entertainment venues will continue to be charged the $2,000 entertainment permits.

“It is aimed in helping restaurant and cafes who can’t afford the one-size-fits-all permit. It is cost prohibitive,” Mirkarimi said. He said the new permits will help these businesses “spice up their particular business model.” And that it will also help “put musicians and performance artists to work.”

Performance areas can not exceed 200 square feet and performances must end by 10 p.m.
