Dennis Herrera comes out against San Francisco Central Subway project

As expected, City Attorney Dennis Herrera formally came out against Muni’s $1.5 billion Central Subway project, putting him at adds with most of his colleagues in San Francisco’s crowed mayoral race.

In a detailed, 11-page “issue paper” posted on his campaign website, Herrera cited the ballooning costs, burden on the Muni system, low ridership, and negative testimony from engineering experts as reasons for his opposition to the project, which will connect transit passengers from the SoMa District to Chinatown.

Once a supporter of the Central Subway, Herrera concluded in his paper that the project was “no longer a prudent investment.”

By coming out against the undertaking, Herrera has drawn the ire of many Chinatown community leaders. At a press conference on Tuesday, several prominent Chinatown citizens derided Herrera and said they would ask voters to support interim Mayor Ed Lee, who has backed the project.
