Mayor Ed Lee breaks $50,000 in fundraising

Could you raise $50,000 in eleven days? Could you do it if you couldn’t accept more than $500 from one person?

Maybe you or I couldn’t do it, but Mayor Ed Lee sure can.

Lee filed paperwork Wednesday required of candidates once they raise or spend $50,000. That’s a week and a half after Lee made his announcement that he is entering the race.

Lee said that he wouldn’t be accepting public financing, and that he wouldn’t accept a voluntary cap to put him on par with the other 15 candidates.

At the pace he’s going right now, with 83 days left until the election, Lee would raise about $377,000. That would be a far cry from the more than $5 million raised by former Mayor Gavin Newsom, and it wouldn’t even come close to $1.475 million cap that other mayoral candidates are held to.

But, hey, the only thing Lee seems to be doing right now to raise money is ask for it on a website.
