San Francisco mayor’s budget director Greg Wagner headed to health department

Greg Wagner, the budget director for Mayor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Ed Lee, is leaving the uncertainty of the mayor’s office for a plum gig as the chief financial officer for the Department of Public Health.

It’s no surprise. Mayoral budget directors usually hang around for a few years before going on to bigger things. Nani Coloretti, Wagner’s predecessor, got a job with U.S. Department of the Treasury as a deputy assistant secretary after wrangling with the city budget for a couple years.

Lee signed the current budget on Tuesday, and there’s no telling who will be San Francisco's new mayor when the budget is signed next year.

Wagner will be responsible for the city department with the largest budget: $1.6 billion. He replaces retiring CFO Gregg Sass who worked for the Department of Public Health for 10 years.
