Over $57 million could be OK’d Tuesday for Central Subway project

Over $57 million in local sales tax funds could be approved Tuesday for Muni’s Central Subway project.

The funding, controlled by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, would go toward the purchase of two tunnel boring machines and storage facilities for the massive vehicles.

On Tuesday, the plans and programs committee of the authority will vote on the $57.2 million allocation. The authority is governed by The City’s Board of Supervisors.

Last month, Muni’s board of directors approved a $233 million contract for Central Subway construction work, a move criticized by some as too hasty, considering an $869 million federal grant has still not been released for the undertaking. Last week, a civil grand jury report panned the $1.6 billion project as too costly and unnecessary.
