After San Francisco Sheriffs Department Captain Paul Michael Miyamoto picked up the endorsement of San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs' Association in an overwhelming vote, he finds himself with a couple other big-name backers.
Supervisor Sean Elsbernd has decided not to endorse his colleague on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Supervisor Ross Mirkarmi, who is also running for sheriff, and has decided to endorse Miyamoto, The San Francisco Examiner has learned.
“Paul is the most qualified candidate in the race. He has proven credentials as a deputy sheriff and I think he could lead that department very well into the future,” Elsbernd said. “Ross is a fine supervisor. I think Paul would make a better sheriff.”
Former Supervisor and mayoral candidate Bevan Dufty is also endorsing Miyamoto. Dufty said that Miyamoto received his endorsement because of his experience in the Sheriff's Department and because he is “well-suited in helping people coming out of jail and to run a strong public safety department.”
Both endorsements come from more moderate politicians, in different political circles than the more progressive Mirkarimi, but the fact Miyamoto is picking up some momentum could mean there is going to an interesting sheriff’s race after all.
