Drivers will no longer be able to catch a break at broken parking meters.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved on Tuesday the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s proposed rule to enact a two-hour maximum parking limit for parking at inoperable or broken parking meters.

The agency’s reasons for the new rules include such things as discouraging people from “monopolizing these spaces” and “improve parking management.”

The policy also is a disincentive for vandals. The agency said that every day between 1.2 percent and 2 percent of its parking meters, between 300 and 500 meters out of the about 26,000, are vandalized.

Fines for exceeding the parking limit at broken meters will be the same for parking at an expired metered spot, $55 for outside the downtown area, and $65 in the downtown area.

The agency is often looking to obtain more revenue from its parking meters.
