The fate of AT&T’s plan to install 726 boxes around The City in public rights of way remains uncertain, after the Board of Supervisors postponed again a vote on the proposal.
“I’m becoming the king of the AT&T continuance,” Supervisor Scott Wiener joked.
Wiener said he had requested a hearing on The City’s Better Streets plan to hear from city departments about how the plan deals with surface mounted utilities as well as for more information that could help with the debate.
The committee hearing will take place July 11.
The board is scheduled to vote on the AT&T proposal the following week on July 19. AT&T’s proposal to install the boxes was exempted from having to undergo a environmental review by the Planning Department. Such reviews are required under state law if a project is found to have significant impacts. AT&T says such a review is not needed and has threatened to sue.
San Francisco Beautiful is fighting to require such a review, and has also said the company should install the boxes on private property instead.
