People in Oakland want to be able to turn parking spaces into common areas, too.

An online news nonprofit, Oakland Local, reports that it does not have a permit process like The City’s, but businesses are willing to pay for it.

According to the nonprofit a cafe in North Oakland built a $500, temporary parklet to cover an abandoned bus stop that the cafe brings out for special occasions until there is some permit process.

It’s pretty similar to Park(ing) Days when people reclaim the pavement with ornaments of their own.

In the meantime, more than 40 people have applied to The City’s streamlined process and they just started accepting more. But now, instead of administrative issues, The City is working out NIMBY issues.
