Rigid regulations to be discussed by the San Francisco Entertainment Commission on Tuesday evening are coming under fire from civil liberties and privacy groups.
Under rules proposed by Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Police Department, nightclubs would be required to use metal detectors, security cameras and have an added police presence in an effort to stem nightlife violence.
But groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation have come out against those rules, saying they would “pose a grave threat to the rights of freedom of association, due process, and privacy” in San Francisco.
“The Commission should reject this attack on our most basic civil liberties,” the group wrote. “San Francisco cannot hope to remain a hub of cultural and political activity if we are stripped of our civil liberties the moment we walk through the door of a venue.”
The commission will hold a hearing on the rules at 6:30 p.m. in room 400 at City Hall.
