HANC recycling center could move next to Recology

The HANC recycling center that is still operating in Golden Gate Park despite Rec and Park’s notice of eviction effective April 1 could relocate to near Pier 96, neighboring Recology’s facility.

Apparently Mayor Ed Lee offered them a lot near the eastern waterfront as an alternative to the Kezar Stadium lot that they are being forced out of to make way for a community garden, according to HANC’s Executive Editor Ed Dunn.

Recology also has its recycling center in that area.

But Dunn said he still needs to figure out whether the rent at the pier - up to $5,000 a month - is worth it.

In the meantime HANC attorneys say the center is legally allowed to stay on the lot until June.

A superior court judge will decide on Monday whether HANC recycling center is squatting.

The Rec and Park Commission at its regular meeting on Thursday will likely vote to accept a $30,000 gift to pay for 15 big, recycling receptacles for popular spots in Golden Gate Park to help fill the void.
