A five-year plan to raise fares for Golden Gate Transit’s bus and ferry passengers will be up for consideration this week.

The Golden Gate Bridge District, which oversees operations on the span while maintaining a transit fleet, is facing a five-year $89 million shortfall, and the fare increase program is one of over 30 ideas bandied about to cut that deficit. The fare increases would generate $2.6 million for the district.

On Thursday, the bridge district’s finance committee will discuss the proposal. If it’s passed at the committee, it will go for final authorization at the agency’s full board meeting Friday. The implementation date for the fare increase program would be July 1.

Also at the meeting Friday, the board will continue discussions on a plan to lay off workers from the district’s customer services center, a proposal that would save about $3 million over 10 years.
