The public comment period for a contentious proposal to force dogs onto leashes in several popular dog-walking spots such as Fort Funston was extended until May 29.

Originally the comment period for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s draft Dog Leash Environmental Impact Statement that maps leash laws at 21 of its open spaces in the Bay Area was scheduled to close April 14.

The draft drastically reduces where they can roam off-leash, if at all, which is the GGNRA’s attempt to balance recreational needs for all its users and also the animals that live in the parks.

Dog walkers who were trying to comment online said the connection was impaired, and that it would make sense to allow more time to relish in the 2,388-page, 14-pound draft anyway.

In the meantime, The City’s officials who have concerns with the plans are about to take the debate to another level.
