The fee for non-San Franciscans to enter Golden Gate Park's Botanical Garden was supported by a watchdog group in The City.

Members of the 24-member Park, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Committee voted 11-4 Tuesday to oppose a resolution by San Francisco Board of Supervisor John Avalos to scrap the non-resident fee.

Avalos wants to appropriate future property transfer revenues and cut the fee for April, May and June because is had a “chilling” effect on the park.

Frank Triska, chair of the PROSAC said that he supports keeping the fee as is.

“I don’t know what was going on in the rest of their minds, but that is what I personally think,” Triska said.

In response to Avalos’ proposal, Rec and Park is pushing for legislation that would solidify the admission cost.

According to a Rec and Park announcement last week, the Board of Supervisors is preparing to, "Entertain legislation introduced by Mayor Ed Lee to make permanent the $7 fee for non-resident visitors."

Triska said the garden would struggle without it, “Unless someone else comes up with a better idea.”

However, termed-out Nancy Wuerfel who had a strong voice on the committee said that the decision was surprising because they usually do not favor fees.
