One week after regulators accused Muni of several safety and operational infractions on its rail line, The City’s transit agency met to renew their claims that they are within compliance of state rules.

The California Public Utilities Commission, which oversees all rail regulations in the state, released a series of findings critical of Muni on Feb. 25, with the regulator threatening to fine the city agency $20,000 a day unless it fixed its problems.

On Friday, Muni’s safety and transit directors spoke before the agency’s Board of Directors, with both insisting that the department is not in violation of any state rules.

Reginald Mason, head of safety at Muni, said CPUC’s allegations “were a shock, and continue to be a shock.”

Representatives from CPUC were noticeably absent from the hearing Friday. SFMTA Board member Malcolm Heinicke surmised that the agency may be busy dealing with the National Transportation Safety Board’s report on the San Bruno explosion, but Muni Executive Director Nathaniel Ford said that the agency met with members of the CPUC’s rail division on Wednesday. The NTSB’s three-day hearing on the explosion began on Tuesday in Washington and finished yesterday.
