Progressive Public Defender Jeff Adachi may be taking a second run at pension reform, but he isn’t looking at throwing his hat into the crowded mayoral race this year, he said in an interview Tuesday.

“I don’t have any present plans to run for mayor,” Adachi said. “I think that unless we fix this pension problem, there’s not gonna be a city to run. I mean, that sounds kind of drastic, but it’s true. I see putting all the time I can spare ... into this pension reform.”

Asked about former supervisor and current bar owner Chris Daly’s suggestion that the lack of progressive candidates may prompt him to run for mayor, Adachi said he would prefer making change in another way.

“I don’t know if that’s a reason to run,” Adachi said. “I think people gotta run for mayor, if they really want to do the job. And from what I see, there’s two ways that you can make reform. Sure, one, from the inside, but that hasn’t been too successful so far, so I’m looking at creating reform from the outside.”

“And you know ... most people would say that makes me unelectable, which is probably true,” Adachi said.
