Four months away from expiration, the $7 fee for nonresidents at the Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park will go before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, who will decide whether it will remain permanently or be eliminated early.
Supervisor John Avalos proposed legislation that would appropriate future property transfer revenues and cutthe fee for April May and June because is had a “chilling” effect on the park. In response, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department is pushing for legislation that would solidify the admission cost.
The initial resolution to impose the fee allowed for its annulment if Rec and Park found a new tax that could be utilized instead, which is what Avalos is proposing to do like he implied earlier.
But according to a Rec and Park announcement Wednesday, the Board of Supervisors is preparing to, "Entertain legislation introduced by Mayor Edwin Lee to make permanent the $7 fee for non-resident visitors. "
It goes on to project that the entrance fee could bring in $542,055 for the next fiscal year from a 55-acre space that employs 11 gardeners.
Either way, admissions for San Francisco residents will remain free.
