After two stories ran in Friday’s San Francisco Examiner about the latest mentally ill person killed in an officer-involved shooting this year, an advocate for the mentally ill pointed out that a California law is meant to avoid such situations.

The advocate, DJ Jaffe, pointed out a database of people killed across the country in situations where mental illness is a factor.

“January 10th will mark the 10-year anniversary of Laura Wilcox's shooting which led to California's Laura's Law,” Jaffe wrote. “It was supposed to stop this kind of incident statewide, but hasn't because authorities won't use it.”

Laura’s Law allows courts to order patients with serious psychiatric problems to engage in outpatient care. The law only applies in counties that opt in, and in San Francisco, Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier failed in 2010 to implement the law locally.
