Golden Gate Bridge District to resume talks on all-electronic tolling

Two weeks after delaying, the Golden Gate Bridge District’s Board of Directors will resume talks this week on whether to implement all-electronic tolling on the span.

The district, facing a five-year projected shortfall of $89 million, has proposed eliminating all 32 of its toll-collectors by 2012, a move designed to save $16 million over 10 years.

On Jan. 13, the district’s Finance Committee was scheduled to take action on the proposal, but opted to put off the discussion to get more information. Many members of the committee expressed concerns about the job losses from the plan.

On Thursday, the Finance Committee will again discuss the proposal. If it’s recommended, it will go for final authorization before the district’s full Board of Directors on Friday.
