By the end of next year, toll collectors on the Golden Gate Bridge will be a thing of the past.

After delaying a vote for two weeks, the bridge district’s Finance Committee voted in favor of a proposal to transition the iconic span into all-electronic tolling. By eliminating its 32 toll-collectors, the bridge district, which is facing a five-year shortfall of $89 million, will save $16 million over the next 10 years.

The Finance Committee passed the measure by an 8-3 count on Thursday. It will go before the full Board of Directors on Friday for final authorization.

For motorists who don’t already have a FasTrak account, cameras will be placed at the toll plaza to snap photos of vehicle license plates. Drivers will then be billed at their home through information gathered by their vehicle registration.

A soft launch of the technology will begin February 2012. The program is expected to be rolled out in its entirety by December 2012.
