Amid scandals, SFPD accepts crimelab accreditation

Despite investigations, including a newly revealed one, focusing on the DNA-tesing portion of the San Francisco Police Department crime lab, the facility received its renewed accreditation.

Police Chief George Gascón accepted a certificate from the American Society of Crime Lab Directors on Monday for the DNA and ballistics testing portions of the lab.

The drug-testing portion of the lab will remain shuttered, however, following accusations of criminalist Deborah Madden stealing cocaine from evidence samples. The department did not seek accreditation for the drug testing portion of the lab.

Police will continue to send the drug evidence to Alameda County to be tested, Assistant Chief Denise Schmitt said Tuesday.
