Numerous sources are reporting that the Giants are on the verge of acquiring New York Mets slugger Carlos Beltran, giving the team some much needed offensive pop as its preps for another postseason run.

Both ESPN.com and MLB.com say that the Giants will part ways with a package that includes pitching prospect Zach Wheeler in exchange for Beltran, a six-time all star. A source in the ESPN article said that the deal is “95 percent” done.

Beltran is batting .289 with 15 home runs and a league-leading 30 doubles for the Mets, who are foundering at just a game above .500. The addition of the powerful switch-hitter would be a huge boost to the Giants, who have struggled offensively this season.

The Giants rank second-to-last offensively in the National League in run production this season. Only the Padres have tallied fewer runs than the 371 total that the Giants have posted through 103 games.

Wheeler, a first-round draft pick of the Giants in 2009, is 7-5 with 16 starts for the team’s Class A affiliate in San Jose this year.
