More parking sensors will be coming to San Francisco streets as part of the Municipal Transportation Agency’s SFpark plan.

The SFMTA has already installed 7,000 underground sensors to help monitor the occupancy rates at metered parking spots in The City. Using data obtained from the sensors, the SFMTA adjusts its hourly meters rates accordingly — by 25 cents more in spots with high-demand, and 25 cents less in spaces that are seldom occupied.

Later this summer, the agency will add 1,200 more sensors to metered spots in the SFPark pilot neighborhoods — the Mission District, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Marina, the Financial District, Hayes Valley and the Fillmore District.

Some parking spaces will be closed for 1-4 hours as a result of the construction.
