Thieves didn’t have to rob pricey paintings when hunting for high-valued merchandise at the de Young Museum recently, police said.
The crooks made off with two bicycles that had been locked up on a bike rack in front of the museum on Aug. 29 before 3:15 p.m., police said.
The bikes, which were “prototypes made of silver titanium,” were worth $13,000, they said.
We recently reported that about a bike per day is reported stolen to cops, which doesn’t account for the many thefts that go unreported. Many bike thefts occur in the Mission district, where there are plenty of high-valued two-wheelers to steal, locals said.
