San Mateo police warn of thefts targeting elderly

The San Mateo Police Department is warning residents about a trend of recent burglaries that have targeted the elderly.

The burglaries usually involve one suspect distracting an elderly person at the front door of his or her home while a second suspect enters the residence from another area and steals valuables, police said.

In the most recent incident, police said, an 81-year-old woman realized that jewelry had been stolen from her bedroom Sunday morning after allowing a man to enter her home to examine the water lines.
